"Settle down how? Like family style settle down? Why? Choose someone that enjoys traveling as well. I've never understood why people always believed that once they choose a mate they had to give up things that made them happy. To me that just seems like it would leaving you longing for the time before your find that person. My Lifemate will enrich my life, not hinder it."
She already had, even if she didn't realize it yet.

"Well I'd have to settle down eventually to open up my own practice. I've never heard of a traveling psychologist."
Then his last words hit her and she stopped dead in her tracks. She was going to be sick. Why the charade if he had a lifemate? What the fuck was a lifemate? Sounded a whole lot like a soul mate.
She started pulling away from him. "You have a lifemate? What is that?" Her voice was calm and a bit cold bordering on dangerous.

Shit, he said Lifemate. Wait, she sounded angry?
He turned to her and smiled, she was jealous. "I will, one day. It's what we call our mates. Instead of husband or wife, what have you. We mate for life, and unless we're stupid, we tend to have exceedingly long lives."
He took her hand, letting his fingers intertwine with hers and kissed the back of her hand. He wanted to explain it all, but with her independent mind he worried that a "destined" mate might care her to run the other direction. He had to let her believe that she was in control of her feelings for him.

"Oh."
Now she felt incredibly stupid. If he already had a mate he would have no interest in her. Not all men were whores. Wait...does that mean he was considering her as his mate? The thought put butterflies in her stomach. But he was so much older than her. Why would he be interested in a child?
"Sorry. That was extremely awkward of me. I have no right to judge you. Um, wow, I don't know what to say now. It's cool that you mate for life. Most changing breeds that have any sense of honor do as well."

"It's alright. We all have different words for things. It's not uncommon. I don't consider it judging. I don't really get those that don't. I mean, why mate if you don't intend to stay with them forever. It's not something that one should enter into quickly or without thought. And too many people are too quick to give up on something as soon as it stops being easy. And it's a shame, true love should always be worth the work."
They walked around the lake and he noted the passing of time. "Though, it's starting to get late. I should probably get you home before I have your brother after me." He smirked.

Was it really that late? Time seemed to fly by when she was out with him. She wasn't sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing.
"Wow. Time flies when you're having fun huh? I guess I should be being back. Um, will you stick around for a few minutes after you drop me off? I hate to ask. I just don't want another repeat of last night. I don't think I could handle it."

Cain blushed a bit. "I had intended to. I swear, I will never let anything like that happen to you or Ahmed ever again."

Did she just catch him blushing? She didn't know guys could do that! It was so cute. She smiled at him.
"Of course you won't, My Knight. I'll send you a text when I know is all clear."
She walked him back to his car, just enjoying what little time she had left with him.

"Sounds like a plan." He wasn't leaving anyway. He intended to spend at least threthe next few night perched on her roof to make sure things went smoothly. He turned the radio on, classic rock and headed for her house. He couldn't help but sing along the way. He had always loved music, he used to listen to it and it was almost like he could feel again... And now he could and it was even better.
All too soon he arrived at her door. "Well, this is it, I suppose. Good night, Nefertiti and thank you for a wonderful evening. Let me know how it goes." He gently took her hand and kissed the back of it.

She blushed and reached over to give him a quick peck on the cheek. "Good night Cain. Thank you for the run. I needed it." She grabbed her bag and went inside.
About ten minutes later she texted him. "The coast is clear. He even asked me if I had fun. Weird but good. I'll see you tomorrow."

"Until tomorrow, your highness. Text me at anytime if you need anything." He smiled at his phone and started to shift, the sharp pain in his shoulder reminded him that he was going to have to go home tonight.
He drove home and walked into the the kitchen, dissolving his shirt as he went. He was going to have a drink then go lay in the dirt.

Terryn raised an eyebrow at the large bruise forming on Cain's shoulder. "What the hell happened to you? Can you not go and hang out with that girl without getting hurt?"

Cain smirked. "We went for a run, she tried to be cocky and ran up a tree and got stuck, refused to let me get her down, so she tried to jump to another tree, limb broke, I caught her.... After I took the branch to the shoulder. It sucks, but I'll be alright in the morning. Hey, I didn't have to call in back up this time! So, that's a plus!"
He poured himself a drink, "Want one?"

Terryn chuckled. "Sure. And that's great. I'm glad the mind warp worked. We've had so many problems with parents this year. James' house is full and we had to ship another kid to someone else's house. This is getting ridiculous."

"What the hell is wrong with Parents around here? I mean, how can you treat a child like that? Can you picture any of our parents being like that. I mean, come on. Look at Gregori and Annie's Dad.... They are both bat shit crazy, but they are wonderful fathers!"
Cain poured drinks for him and Terryn and sat at the island, sipping on the amber liquid, enjoying the oaky burn.
