Kat sat in the passenger seat of her brother's car pulling at the hem of her over-sized button down shirt. She was so incredibly nervous. She hadn't been in a real school since she was in Kindergarten. Back before her and her mother were kidnapped. She could still hear her mother telling her that everything was going to be alright. That Daddy was going to find them and it would be ok. She could still see the red line show up across her throat as the assailants slit her throat and let her bleed out into a pool around her. She shook her head trying to get rid of the image. The smell of blood was filling her nose. If it got too far then Natasha would come out. Lance had been working with her to keep her away, but when she got scared or nervous it was more difficult. She hitting the heel of her hand against her temples trying to release the images.
"I can't do this Bubby. I can't be around these people. Are you sure this is the right thing? Can't I just stay home?" She sounded like a small child when she spoke. There were tears in her eyes and she had the large flannel shirt wrapped around her, her hands drew back in the sleeves so that only her fingers showed. She was visibly shaking and starting to rock back and forth in the seat a bit.

Lance was afraid this was going to happen which was why they'd left early. He needed the time to give his sister the confidence she needed to do this. She'd been solitary for too long and he really hoped that being around more people her age would help her. He slowly turned on his blinker and pulled to the side of the road. After parking the car her turned to her with a reassuring smile.
"You can absolutely do this Kitty Kat." That was his favorite pet name for his little sister. "You can't stay home forever. You really want to be annoyed by Rina all that time while I'm at school? I'll be right there any time you need me. All you have to do is think about me and I will be with you in your mind. You'll like meeting new people. You can make friends to talk to. And you'll learn stuff. It'll be exciting. Will you try for your Lancey-poo?" He gave her big puppy dog eyes. They both desperately needed a normal life.

She was trying to keep it together. "But what if she come out? She mean and does nasty things. I'm scared, Bubby." What she wanted to ask was why couldn't they both just stay home. She couldn't stand to have him out of her sight. Ever since she'd gotten back to him, she couldn't take being away. She needed him, hell she even slept in his bed at night. It would be fine if the had the same classes but she didn't know if she would see him at all through the day.
"I don't know, I don't know. Why can't I be with you?"

He felt so horrible for her. He couldn't imagine the hell she had been through. The girl he had finally found was a broken version of his sister. He wondered if he'd ever get the true girl back. I know. But she won't. Cuz you won't let her." He sighed. "Unfortunately Kitty Kat you are younger than I am. I've already been through the classes you need to take." He was second guessing himself now. What if this all exploded in his face? He needed to be strong for her. He wouldn't falter. He wouldn't be pessimistic. He smiled. "You'll be fine. We'll be fine. I'll be right there in the same building. If you need me just call me ok?"

She curled herself up into a ball in the seat, wrapping her arms around her knees and starred out the window. She took several deep breaths to try to keep the demons at bay. He was right, she could do this. She could get through this. One day at a time. She nodded as she muttered to herself. "Water off a ducks back, water off a ducks back, water off a ducks back...." It was something their mother had used to tell them any time something seemed too big or too scary. Just to let the fear roll off them like water off a ducks back. She repeated that phrase under her breath for the rest of the ride.

Lance put the car back in drive and headed towards the school again hoping she'd find the resolve to try this out. School wasn't that far from home so if she couldn't do it, he could take her back quickly and put her in her fort. He pulled into the parking lot and parked. It looked like a lot of people were already here. Now he just needed to get her inside and to the principal's office. But he'd let her decide when.
"Let me know when you are ready Kitty Kat."

She looked at the flood of people walking into the building with her cartoonishly large blue eyes wide. She was trying to remember to breath, she didn't deal with situations like this... She did. But She couldn't come out. Kat had to stay in control.
She mummbled, "Ok, Bubby. Will the kids make fun of me if you hold my hand? Will your friends make fun of you?" She felt terrible, Lance was only a year older than her, but he had become her only support since he had found her and brought her home a few months ago. She hated herself for putting him in that situation.

"You know what? I don't care. And you shouldn't care either. If friends are truly friends they don't make fun of you for things like that. They stand by you and help you stay strong. That's why making friends is so important." He smiled at her, trying to give her the courage to go inside. They still had about fifteen minutes before the first bell so he wasn't overly worried. He was going to take her to meet the new principal and hopefully have some time to explain some things to her.
"So, you ready to go in?"

She nodded her head and unbuckled herself and opened the car door, she got out. Her jeans hugged her womanish curves, curves that belied her young age. Curves that had made her Masters very rich. Her black hair hung in messy waves behind her to her waist. Her blue flannel shirt was unbuttoned with a plain black tank underneath. She put her backpack over her shoulders and hugged her shirt to her and walked to the front of the car to wait for her brother, when he reached her she took his hand and all but clung to him. This was going to be a long day.
"I can do this" She looked up into his eyes, so much like hers, but less sad, less tired. His were brighter than hers.
"Water off a ducks back, water off a ducks back, water off a ducks back." .... Oh, shut the fuck up about your ducks, you whiny little cunt.
Kat stopped for a moment and took a deep breath and held it as long as she could. Not now, I can't do this now
"Water off a ducks back, water off a ducks back...."

Lance got out quickly and took her hand. They stopped once on their way in. He surveyed her eyes while she stood there. Natasha was so close. He could see her in the dark blue irises but then they lightened and it was alright. She kept on with her mantra. It had Riq looking at her a little funny but he smiled and nodded anyway. Lance took her directly to the principal's office.

She stuck to her brother like glue. She knew they had to get her schedule from the principal. Lance had told her that it was a male. She really didn't do well with men. "There are so many guys here, like really big guys! Are they all that big?" She looked over his shoulder at the large blonde man standing by the front door.

"No, they're not all that big. Just the adults. But adults are supposed to be bigger." He smiled at Riq and walked her inside, down the hall and to the principal's office.
