El had set up her class ready for the kids. There was a book on each desk along with a name. "Ms. O'Connell. Hr. 1 Economics" Was written in a beautiful scrolling script across the white board. She looked up as the kids started to come in. She had an easy smile for them.
"Come on in. Find your name and have a seat. You can move once I take attendance. But for now please find your seat and write your name inside the book on your desk. This is your book, it's your responsibility. I don't get it back, they school charges your parents a retarded amount of money more it. You take someone else's book and loose it, they are going to get charged. That's a dick move... Best advise I can give you, kids.... Don't be a dick!"
Karra laughed at the brashness of the new teacher. She looked more like a biker than a teacher, but she was good with that. "That's mighty good advice there, Ma'am." She sat down at the first seat and did as she was told.

Landread raised his brow at the new teacher's words. This was going to be interesting. He looked to where Karra was sitting. "Ha ha. You sit up front. Problem child." He grinned at her and took his seat in the middle. He autographed his book and then waited.
Lance slid in just as the bell had rung. He handed his pass to Ms. O'Connell. "Sorry. Had a bit of an issue this morning. But I'm here." He looked around the room and saw his name towards the back. He shrugged figuring he'd probably just keep the seat.
Keira slid in just a minute later and handed her pass to the teacher and took her seat without a word. She looked perturbed when she didn't see Kaleb in the class. It didn't matter, she'd get him later.

El took roll, writing down the book number that each student had and collecting the unneeded books. "If any of you prefer to go by something other than the name on my roster, just let me know. Just remember my first piece of advice. And choose wisely, I will call you that for the rest of the year and I will be sure to notify administration that it was your request. So, just so you know. You will have four major projects, one each quarter. Two tests, a midterm in December and your final in May. The projects will be individual, I want to know how well you understand the material, not how good you are at convincing your group mates to do your work for you. One of those projects we will start next week and you won't finish until April. This is Economics, we are going to see how well you can design, create and manage a business in these unsteady economic times! I promise it's not meant to be hard. It can be kinda fun if you let it. I can be cool, if you let me. Or I can be a tyrant, I may not look it, but I have it in me, and I promise you have not seen the hell I can make your life. Don't make me ignore my own advice. So, if anyone wants to change their name or has a question, speak now or forever hold your peace. When that's done you can sit where ever you like."

Landread kept his mouth shut. He would be discussing this with Karra later. He knew school was supposed to be getting harder but not even this teacher's good looks were enough to keep him interested. Oh well. He only needed a C to pass the class so he didn't care. This was going to be one of those classes.
Lance was not surprised by her speech but was distracted. He was constantly checking on Kat. Making sure she got into class ok. Making sure she wasn't too scared to be by herself with a bunch of strangers. He knew she had English which sucked because he knew that Kirowitz was a hardass. Of course that had to be her first class. He should have had the principal change that around.
Keira took in everything Ms. O'Connell said, taking notes already. She liked teachers that were right to the point. It helped her keep her shit straight.

Karra moved to sit next to Landread. "Don't worry, you know I won't let you fail." She clapped him on the back as she settled in next to him.
El smiled. "Alright. A few other things" She started passing out a packet of papers what outlined their first project and a general course sylubys. "One, if we are having a test or a presentation, please feel free to bring in a snack or drink. Just make sure you have enough to share. Test days and presentation days are marked on your sylubis, and they are pot lucks. I will bring doughnuts or bagles and coffee and OJ, the rest is on you. And Cell phones!!! I know that everyone has them, don't have them out while I'm lecturing, while your class mates are giving a presentation or while even one test is still on a desk. If you do, I will take it and I hear that our IT guy loves to hack phones and see who has incriminating evidence on their devices to put on facebook." She smirked.
"If it is not one of those three instances, I don't care if you have it out. Please, if you MUST take a phone call, go in the hall. And you may listen to music while your working on homework, which I will give you time in class for. I know you all have lives outside of these four walls and I'm sure you are very busy people."
"Now, I'm sure most of you know each other, but I'm the new person here. So each of you get to ask me one question. Anything at all, school related or not. Just remember the cardinal rule, ladies and gentlemen."

Landread nodded to Karra. She was so good to him. He should probably marry her or something before someone else came by and scooped her up and away from him. But that was a thought for later. He was the first to ask his question. He saw the leather and now he had to know. "What kind of bike do you ride?"

"Today, 2012 Harley Dina Wide Glide." She smiled. She wondered if she was that obvious. She didn't care if she was. It actually made her smile. Diaval had got her interested in motorcycles. He taught her everything he knew about them. She had fallen in love with them as she had with him and his wife. They saved her life.
Karra was next. She didn't know what to ask the woman that stood in front of her. So she decided just to be silly. "You a natural blonde or one of them impostors?"
She just laughed. "Well, my driver's license says blonde and that's what they keep telling me. I'm sure I'll prove it to you guys at least once this year. Just give me time."

Keira raised her hand and asked, "Why do you teach at a high school instead of a college?"
Landread rolled his eyes. Always the supremacist. He hated how she thought that just because someone chooses to work at a high school that they were lowering themselves.

"I enjoy the idea of High school. Yes, you have to be here, which means the value you fine in your education may not be the same as the person sitting next to you. But, you HAVE to be here. Which means, you are all equally entitled to the best education possible. This is the time when people can be made or broken. Not everyone in this room will go on to college. Of the group that does, not all of you are ever going to walk the halls of an Ivy League university. I say so what? If I can offer you the best chance to succeed regardless of where life takes you after you walk out of my room, then I'm doing my job. That might sound cliche, then I'm cliche. But I don't believe that you have to be sitting in a college classroom to deserve a collegent education. And to be fair, I had some really SHITTY college professors. And in High School, I don't have to teach summer session." What they didn't know is that she came from absolutely nothing, and it was a High School History teacher and his wife that had saved her. She could think of no more noble a profession than to be a high school teacher.

Lance smiled as Keira got put in her place. He admired the teacher for her response. He liked her verbiage as well. He was trying to think of a question and wasn't really coming up with anything so he just raised his hand and asked, "What's the best piece of advice you can give us about life itself?"

"Well, my usual answer is what I said earlier, but you were a bit late so it would be, Don't be a dick. But outside of that. Everyone is going to make mistakes, you are going to do something you regret, it will change your life. But how it changes you is up to you. You can let it destroy you or you can let it forge you. And you have to remember that it's never shameful to need help. There isn't a single work of art that made itself." That was a lesson that she had to learn in a more difficult way than she hoped any of these kids would ever have to.

Lance nodded. How true that was. One of the students in the back of the room called out, "Are you single?" Lance scowled back at him. He really hated the jocks in this school. He hoped with the new teachers and principal things would change.

El expected things like this, especially from the older grades. "Why? Is your right hand getting tired?" She just gave him a daring smirk. She treated they students like they were in a college class. She found that you gained more respect from them if you treated them as though they deserved respect.

Laughter ensued. Once it died down a bit, one of the goth kids over to the side asked, "What's the darkest thing you've ever done?"
Landread rolled his eyes and rested his head on Karra's shoulder. He hated posers. The kid was clearly the rich kid emo that just ended up pissing everyone off.

El's face when cold. So many pieces of her past ran through her head in rapid succession. When she spoke the jovial nature was gone. She was very stoic and matter of fact. "I've met the devil on his doorstep and had him shut me out. And that's more than I pray you can ever say." She held the kids eyes for a moment before looking away and smiling again.
"Alright anyone else?"
